Tribes review

Tivoli Alvor is broadly family-oriented with multiple pools (including a dedicated kids' pool and splash waterpark), a kids' club, frequent children’s activities and an hourly mini-train to Alvor plus convenient beach access. Many families praise friendly, helpful staff and spacious family-room layouts. However, parents report inconsistent housekeeping and cleanliness (including ant infestations in some rooms), variable food quality and restrictive restaurant booking/all‑inclusive rules. Pools can feel cold outside peak months and the resort gets very busy during school holidays.

Families love
  • Dedicated kids' pool, splash waterpark and organised children’s activities/kids club

  • Easy beach access and hotel shuttle/train to Alvor for family outings

  • Friendly, attentive staff and generally spacious family accommodation options

Worth knowing
  • Several reports of ant infestations and inconsistent housekeeping

  • Food quality and all‑inclusive availability can be limited; some a la carte restaurants require advance booking

  • Outdoor pools often chilly and main pools can be crowded with limited sunbeds

Families talk about the kids club

The pool for young children and the kids club are separate from the three main pools, as is the lovely adults-only pool - a real bonus.

The evening entertainment team were amazing - I think they also run the kids club and other activities like water polo.

Good all round resort

Travelled as a family of 4 (5 year old and a 2 year old). Travelled in Easter school holidays so it was very busy with families but expected. Overall, we thought it was excellent value for money. We were fortunate to have excellent weather for the 8 days there - 1 day was cloudy, the rest was 22+ and sunny. Staff were great throughout. 5/5. Food was good. Had to book 3 days in advance for the restaurants - get released early hours of the morning 3 days ahead. Worth doing for mixing it up. Buffet was generally OK though and enough selection - we attended here 4 out of the 8 nights. High ceilings so you didn't feel like you were in a busy canteen like many hotels feel like. 4/5 rating. Facilities and activities - 4.5/5. Plenty of stuff to do on site for children. Splash water park was great for the kids. When busy the main swimming pools can be crowded - out of school holidays I suspect this isn't a problem. There is an adult only pool also. Accommodation - 4/5. We had block 13 which is near the splash park and kids activities. This worked very well for popping back to the room if needed. Room was spacious - we had a cot and the sofa turned into a big double. No noise as away from the evening entertainment. To note - they have put a temporary marquee up at the front for the evening entertainment. Yes it isn't the best, but without it, they wouldn't be able to offer the shows/mini disco. Grab a drink and just enjoy! On a whole - the trip advisor average of 4.2/5 is probably about right. We have done Ikos and Sani several times - obviously once you've been there, fulfilling expectations is near impossible, but we found this resort very suitable for our needs, budget friendly and it ticked a lot of boxes we wanted in the Easter school holidays. If the finer cracks were tidied up, nothing major (kids waterpark and activiites look dated - new paint and turf), then it would compete and the hotel could probably charge more than they do.

Family friendly all inclusive that feels grown up. A solid four star hotel (four star plus)

We had a lovely stay. The hotel is split across a hillside with lots of greenery. It’s not too big but still has 6 pools. The pool for young children and the kids club is separate to the three main pools as is the lovely adults only pool which is a real bonus. This is a family friendly resort which feels grown up. So you get the advantages of all inclusive with kids but in a very nice setting. The restaurants and eating spaces are very nicely decorated. The wellness centre is over 16s only, small but has what you need; sauna, steam, jacuzzi, heated pool and loungers and a gym. The staff were fantastic and there were so many of them everywhere! There’s a separate large tent set out of the way with a bar and entertainment in the evening, as well as coffee hut, ice cream and candy floss hut etc. The layout of the report means you can find areas that are nice and quiet to relax. The rooms were spacious and have a balcony and a fridge and cleaned every day with fresh towels and water. Food varied from ok to excellent - and also a very wide variety of food including a bbq. The beach is 10 minutes fast walk away and is amazing; caves and large rocks and sandy beaches. Alvor is small but worth a wander, quite a few cafes and restaurants and shops. The hotel has a free land train to take you there and back. Outdoor pools were cold but that didn’t stop people swimming. Local wine and beer was very good. Cocktails were ok but nothing special. Good selection of mocktails and the coffee was very good. We had a great time. Very relaxing.

AVOID!! Ants in room. If your expecting a so called 5 star hotel, don't it's a 3 star at best.

AVOID!!! Very dissatisfied with level of customer response to a problem we had on our recent holiday at the Tivoli Alvor hotel in Portugal. Upon arrival, we noticed ants in our room and went to speak to reception that afternoon as we have a young baby and 8 year old. We were told that they will do a deep clean and we would need to stay out of the room for a while, which was fine. Upon retuning to our room, they seemed to have gone. Upon getting up the next morning, the ants were back and there were more of them. We went to speak to reception about this and they said they would do another deep clean. We advised that they were getting under the skirting board and a deep clean would not fix this issue. They told us they would deep clean again so we went out of the room again. Back in the afternoon, I sat down in the chair to feed my baby and ants started crawling up my arm! Off we went to reception to complain again and said we needed to move room as I cannot have this, especially with a baby and child! Nobody in any situation should have to put up with that. Hotel said they would give us a new room whilst they did a deep clean again. I advised that if the deep clean did not work we needed a new room for the duration of our stay as this is not acceptable and the room they gave us was just for the night. We had to pack our overnight stuff, which is a lot as our baby is bottle fed so needed to take the steriliser and everything...not a 5 minute job. We stayed the night, I went back to the original room the next morning to pick something up I had forgotten and there were ants on our bed!! No deep clean had happened yet! We went out for the morning after packing up all our stuff in a case and leaving it in reception l to be told a deep clean would happen ASAP. We returned in the afternoon to bed told that the deep clean had just been completed. We advised that we would check the room and if there were any ants, we need a new room today. We checked the room and there were still ants! Going back to reception, they reluctantly arranged another room but it was not clean so it would be done by 5.30pm by the latest and they would call my wife's mobile when the room was ready. We went and packed up our old room and went to Saltys to wait for the call. We waited until 6pm and no call so we went to reception to see what was happening. Apparently they called our old room to advise it was ready and not the mobile we had advised...the communication between staff was absolutely shocking. They were writing notes on bits of paper so there was no surprise that this hadn't happened. Upon getting to our new room, it was so hot as the air conditioning was not on that we needed to wait outside with the kids until it started to work. We waited nearly an hour for our luggage to be moved over from the old room. By this time, we exhausted, fed up, nearly missed our allocated dinner slot and felt we had lost 2 days of our holiday messing around with room changes and cleans that could have been sorted straightaway if they just moved our room. This was extremely stressful and really tarnished our holiday, especially as they were the best 2 days for weather whilst we were there. The hotel was extremely busy and the amenities were not enough for the number of people staying there. There were not enough sunbeds for the pool, we had to sit on the grass areas by the main pools and there were not enough seats for lunchtime at Saltys, especially when it rained and there was no other indoor option. The evening entertainment was very limited and again, definitely not enough seating area, especially for the number of children there. Limited to no access to alcoholic drinks after 7pm due to bars closed. Only single bar at one end of complex. Both breakfast and dinner was shocking. Breakfast was cold, eggs dangerously made. Drinks available at both breakfast and dinner very poor. Self service drinks ever low or out, not operational. Overall, this was a very bad experience at this hotel, one that caused us a lot of stress and we lost 2 days of our holiday trying to sort out our room, which is not acceptable. We would not recommend this hotel at all and would suggest you look into it further as there were a lot of people complaining at reception every time we were there! They are very understaffed and over subscribed, I would hate to think what it would be like in peak season. The Tivoli website states that they are a 5* hotel, this is not a 5* hotel at all.. 3* at best.
